They say you can’t go back but …

Penny Dunsworth was broken.

Before she became the white ghost, she was already unrecognizable. A troubled teenage girl with monsters that couldn’t be slain, and an irrational crush on the only man she considered a friend. Her one crime was daring to think she might finally be free.

Luca Puzza was only trying to figure things out.

His days are balanced between his duty and worth. He can’t seem to make it all work, but that doesn’t stop him from trying. Somethings are just more important—like the girl with the haunted eyes who seems to trust him. He only ever wanted to help.

The past never stays where it belongs—why would it?

It’s the only thing left to warn about the future.

NOTE: One Breath After Another is book 2 in the After Another trilogy. It follows the same couple – Luca and Penny – from present to past, and back again. The books must be read in order. Be warned, the trilogy discusses a subject that may be triggering.

Review:

Penny and Luca’s story just keeps getting better and better. This is the second book of the trilogy. And I must say that it really ties the story really well. The flashbacks and the retelling of the past were so intricately woven in the plot that it will make you love all these characters even more.

I also loved those little snippets of Penny and Little Cross moments! Auntie Penny really kills it here. Well, not literally though. Because with her line of work, she could really be a totally badass killer. In fact, she is!

There’s so much to love about this book and so much to unpack. While it may leave you wanting a little more until you count the days for the next release, I loved how the second book really puts Penny and Luca’s story into context.

The whole trilogy used in medias res as an exposition device. There are cases when a romance series that uses this plot device may leave you exasperated. But this one is not like that at all. There was a really poignant way that the author narrated the past. And the way Bethany-Kris so artfully shifted between the present and the flashbacks were really great!

Overall, this book will really leave you wanting more but this one will also make you feel quite satisfied at the same time.

He finds the unfindable, but she’s terribly good at hiding …

Penny Dunsworth is dead.

Well, she should be—a piece of her certainly is. The broken girl she once was no longer exists. Now a trained assassin for The League, she’s turned into the worst nightmare for the monsters who once haunted her every waking moment. She has to be … it’s the only way to keep her past safe. That is if she can keep it from catching up.

Luca Puzza is chasing a ghost.

He’s never once been able to catch her in the five years that he spent searching. Until now. The promise he made to find the girl who disappeared without a trace turned into an obsession that changed his life. But the woman he was looking for is only a shadow of who he finds. She’s dangerous … for his heart and life, and so are the secrets she’s protecting.

One can only play with monsters for so long before they start to notice you’re not the same. In this world, predators can just as easily become prey.

Except she stopped being a victim long ago.
And it’s time for this to end.

Review:

At last Penny’s story is finally here and I couldn’t be more thrilled to read it. I have been curious about her character ever since I’ve read about her in one of Nazio and Ros’ stories.
I loved how Bethany-Kris has artfully depicted her struggles and her trauma. It felt real and visceral. But what I loved most about Penny’s character is that she didn’t feel like a victim. She was a survivor. Her story is more than just about revenge and I’m excited to read more about it in the next two books.

But of course, I wouldn’t end this post without mentioning the relentless Luca. I loved his tenacity and dedication for finding the broken teenage girl for half a decade. If that’s not love than I don’t know what else you can call it.

One Breath After Another couldn’t come soon enough. And of course, I’ll be on the lookout to devour the next book in the series!

SYNOPSIS

What happens when you mix an average American woman with a decidedly not average future King?

I can tell you from experience—a whole lot of complications.

You see, four months ago, my all-American sister, Kelsey, found out that she’s not actually my sister—she’s a princess of a country we’d never heard of. She begged me to come along when she was whisked off to her new palace, so here I am. An outsider who doesn’t fit in anywhere.

Now that she’s settled, I should go back to my exciting new career in New York. I absolutely should not stay in a country where I got shot (long story), where I suck so badly at the national sport that I accidentally murdered the symbol of the monarchy in front of half the country, and—oh yeah—where I can’t stop ogling Kelsey’s actual brother.

The Crown Prince.
The man who has to marry a very important princess. (not me)
The man who must create the next heir to the throne. (without me)
The man I absolutely can never be with. (remember that long story?)
The man who just gave me the best sex of my life…

Did I mention that it’s complicated?
